Dearest Art Lover and Fur Parent,

 

Hello, I’m Melinda—the artist behind The Unrolled Canvas. If you’ve ever wondered a little about the person behind the brush, here’s my story.

 

I’ve been married to my wonderful husband, Brian, for ten years, and together we’re raising our three beautiful little ones. Our family has also included two very loved fur babies: Sydney, our sweet Australian Shepherd mix who we sadly lost this past summer, and Kira, our beloved kitty.

 

Losing Sydney has been one of the hardest chapters of this season of our lives. She was our first baby and a deeply loved part of our family, and her absence has left our home a little quieter. Her life—and the love we shared with her—has also reminded me even more of why I feel so connected to the animals I have the privilege of painting. They become woven into the fabric of our lives in ways that are impossible to fully put into words.

 

I’m currently in the thick of motherhood, raising three little ones while building a creative life of my own. This season has transformed me more than any other in my life. It is full, demanding, messy, and deeply joyful. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, I’ve found that creating has become more than something I simply enjoy—it has become a way for me to slow down, reconnect with myself, and make something beautiful in the midst of a very busy life.

 

Art has always been a part of who I am. I grew up loving to paint and draw, took studio art and painting courses throughout high school, and later earned a degree in interior design from Miami University of Ohio. That background gave me a strong foundation not only in creating art, but in understanding color, composition, proportion, and how all of those elements work together to tell a story.

 

These days, my studio looks a little different than the traditional artist’s studio you might imagine. I’ve traded the kitchen table for a tiny but wonderfully steady corner of our basement. It’s not large or fancy, but it’s mine—and it has everything I need. My paints, brushes, canvases, and ideas all have a home there. On the other side of the partition is my children’s play area, which feels like a pretty perfect representation of this season of my life: motherhood and art existing side by side.

 

And honestly, I love it.

 

There’s something beautiful about creating within the life I already have rather than waiting for the perfect circumstances to begin. My little corner of the basement has become a place where I can disappear into a painting for a while, experiment, make mistakes, follow an idea, and simply enjoy the process.

 

Today, I feel incredibly fortunate to use this gift to paint some of the most meaningful companions in people’s lives. Creating custom pet portraits is especially close to my heart because they celebrate the love, loyalty, personality, and quiet companionship that make our animals so much more than pets. They are family.

 

Alongside commissioned work, I’m also embracing the freedom of creating paintings simply because I’m drawn to them. I’m continuing to explore my voice as an artist, discover my signature style, and create original collections that reflect the things I find beautiful.

 

There is something incredibly special about knowing that one of my paintings may hang in someone’s home for years to come—becoming part of their everyday surroundings, bringing them a little joy, and perhaps even reminding them of someone they love.

 

That idea is at the heart of The Unrolled Canvas.

 

I hope my work can create those little moments that make you pause. A beloved face. A familiar feeling. A beautiful memory. Something worth lingering over.

 

When I’m not painting, you’ll usually find me cooking, decorating our home, chasing after my children, or finding some small pocket of quiet in the middle of the beautiful chaos. Being a stay-at-home mom is one of the greatest gifts I could have ever been given, and art has become a meaningful way to honor both creativity and motherhood in this season of my life.
